A well-known maritime route to the Americas and India, it was a mandatory stop for cargo supplies and the wonderful Madeira wines that made it famous. The name \"Villões\" (villains) is the nickname given to the inhabitants of the small island opposite, Porto Santo, with only 3,000 inhabitants, in contrast to the 300,000 of the island of Madeira. The name comes from the word vila (town) and has today gained a double connotation from the Prophets (people from Porto Santo). \nTinta Negra, a grape variety from the Villains' era, is part of the ancient grape varieties of Madeira Island and remains the basis for the wines that made this island famous. Outside of Madeira Island, it is a rare variety found only in regions near the sea, where it is known by other names such as Molar in Colares, where it is practically extinct, Saborinho in the Azores, which is undergoing recovery, and the Canary Islands, where it is called Tinta Bastardo and has very little presence. It should not be confused with the Bastardo variety (aka Trosseau), its half-sister.\n Viticulture. Training system: pergola. Vine age: approximately 40 years. Soils: volcanic, leptosols or andosols; pH between 4.6 and 6.3 (neutral-basic). Location: from three plots, in Estreito de Câmara de Lobos and São Vicente. \nWinemaking: The grapes were harvested manually, transported in 20kg boxes and selected on a sorting table. 70% destemmed and 30% whole bunch. Fermentation occurred spontaneously, followed by 40 days of maceration.\n Aged for 8 months, 70% in used French oak barrels and 30% in vats.\n Tasting notes: Light ruby ​​color. Intense nose, notes of crushed fresh strawberry, some vegetal notes. Fresh, textured attack, good acidity, the aromas from the nose are repeated.
